Our new building project commenced construction in Lime Street East Perth, January 2011. This project will be a contemporary expression of St Bart’s value in the community, and signifies a new approach to addressing homelessness issues. This development will be one of Australia’s leading social housing facilities.
The project received $23 million from state funding, $7.3 million from federal funding, $1 million from St Bartholomew’s House Foundation, and an additional $750,000 Jobs Fund Grant for energy saving initiatives including solar panels, wind pods, storm water collection initiatives, window treatments and water saving plumbing devices.
Together we are building a unique and complex integrated accommodation project that will fit into the East Perth precinct, be as 'green' as possible and will deliver 148 high quality units for people who are experiencing homelessness.

Unfortunately, the not so good news is that we have experienced another delay in the Lime Street building project and we are unable to go to tender to appoint a builder as planned. There are still some issues that have not been resolved with possible contamination on the land and although we thought the processes were all in place, we have had to utilise alternative strategies to get things moving again. Initial clearing has been done to clear the site of years of accumulated rubbish to allow soil testing to take place.
July 2010
The Tenders for the construction of Lime Street were called and short listing of builders commenced. In this month the clearing began on the site for Lime Street.
August 2010
On St Bartholomew’s Day, 24th August, St Bart’s celebrated with the official “Sod Turning” on the Lime Street site by eight people who have had a significant input or ongoing interest in this exciting new project. The participants in the sod turning had a little difficulty in the spelling of St Bart’s on the shovels but after some shuffling about we got there.
Those holding the shovels and doing the official “Turning of the Sod”, pictured were (left to right) CEO of St Bart’s, Lynne Evans; Deputy Lord Mayor of the City of Perth, John Tognolini; Premier of WA, Colin Barnett; Archbishop Roger Herft; Minister of Housing, Bill Marmion; Chair of Lotterywest Board, John Aitkin; former MLA, Alannah MacTiernan; and the Patron of St Bartholomew’s Foundation, Professor David Malcolm. After the sod was officially turned, our guests adjourned to City Farm for coffee and cake and entertainment by the Spirit of the Streets choir led by Bernard Carney.

Present at this momentous occasion were representatives of St Bart’s Building Committee, Northerly Building Group, Appian Group (Project Managers) and the Department of Housing
December 2010
Northerly Group took control of the site at the start of December, putting up site fencing, setting up their site offices and beginning earthworks in preparation for the start of construction in January 2011.
Our builders, The Northerly Group, have started construction. The footings for the South Tower have been poured as well as the lift shaft and stairwell and the reinforcing steel for the first of the columns is beginning to take shape.
The footings for the North Tower have now been poured and our in-ground fire tank is under construction.

Construction is powering ahead with all the lift shafts under the construction, the fire tank nearing completion and the columns on the north tower under way.
Pictured are Lynne Evans, St Bart's CEO and Carol Houghton, Policy Manager, inspecting the site.
It's now 2 months into the build. The concrete for the fire tank has been completed and form work is rising above it.
The first of the ground floor concrete on the south tower has been poured and the lift shafts and stairwells are heading for the first floor level. Scaffolding and form work for the first floor on the south tower has commenced and our building is starting to rise above the car park.
We are now well into the build and our building is rising out of the ground. The form work for the first floor on both towers, the lift shafts and stairwells is well under way.
Some of the ground floor concrete has been poured and preparations are being made to install soak wells and the storm water tank. Feel free to call past our site in Lime Street East Perth for a first hand look at our new building.
Its the end of March and the first stages of the first floor concrete pour has taken place on both towers. Work has begun on the columns to support the second floor and the form work on the second floor for the south tower is also well under way.
Lift shafts and stairwells are rising up and our building is starting to make an impression on the skyline of East Perth.
The first and second floors are taking shape and the columns for the third level are under way. The south tower and its surrounds have also come a long way since last month with the first floor coming along nicely and the foundations for the second level in progress.
May 2011
Another month has gone by and our Lime Street project is beginning to look less like a construction site and more like the building we envisioned. The third level is well underway and the towers are continuing to make their mark on the East Perth skyline. The south side of the building has also come a long way with some of the walls in place and the exterior taking shape.
We expect the major concrete pour for the third level to be taking place quite soon after which the construction of the remainder of the floors should power ahead.
June 2011
In a little over two weeks, our Lime Street building has taken on an entire new look. The concrete for the top floors is under way and the start of brickwork to form the buildings walls has commenced … the first of many bricks!
Over the past few months we’ve seen the exterior come a long way, and in recent weeks the building’s interior is also taking shape as we see individual rooms and space formed. We look forward to seeing more developments in the coming weeks.
It has been six months since construction commenced at the Lime Street site, and to say that the site has come a long way is an understatement! The building’s exterior is continuing to take shape with more brick work having been completed in the last couple of weeks.
The concrete for the 5th level on the South Tower has been poured and the North Tower is at the 4th level form work. The resemblance between the original artists impression of the building and what we see today is becoming clearer and even more exciting for everyone involved.
July 2011
It has been just over a month since we last checked in on the Lime Street development and the building is certainly making its mark in East Perth.
With the size of the building truly emphasized from the Claisebrook train station bridge, it’s clear to see that the Lime Street building is going to make a significant difference to so many people’s lives by providing a supportive community and place to call home for those whose lives are in crisis.
The concrete for the 6th level on the south tower has been poured and the form work for the 5th level is ready for the concrete pour on the north tower. The brick work has climbed to the third level on both towers and the internal brick work is under way.
The next few months will see both the interior and exteriors really start to take shape and we’re excited to see the progress continue.
As construction heads into its eighth month, the Lime Street Development is beginning to resemble the plans we laid eyes on early last year even more so. Seeing the size of the building, whether it be up close or from a distance, you can see that this building is going to make such a big difference to so many lives.
The coming months will see steel works and concrete continuing; hydraulics, electrical and plumbing services, room partitions and window frames being installed and more brick work taking place, making our building look more like the home that it will be to so many Perth people in need. Works are estimated to be 54% complete as at the end of August 2011.
