In Loving Memory 💙
15 January 2025
Today, at St Bart’s James Watson Centre, we came together to bid farewell to a beloved resident—a much-loved member of our family. For many of our aged care residents, we have the incredible privilege of being that family, offering love and companionship during their final years.
In these final years of life, having love and care around you is not just a comfort—it is a necessity. It reminds us of our shared humanity and the deep need for connection. Everyone deserves to feel valued, cherished, and celebrated, especially as they approach life’s final chapters.
Our memorial services, led by our Chaplain, are truly beautiful. They are moments of connection where we honour the lives of those who have touched our hearts. During these services, we share photos, play favourite songs, and exchange heartfelt tributes and cherished memories.
We laugh, we cry, and we hold each other close—residents and staff alike—as we navigate the emotions of saying goodbye. Though the loss is never easy, there is a profound sense of comfort in seeing the love and friendship that fills the room. It is these moments that remind us why we do what we do, making every hard moment worthwhile.
The James Watson Centre is a unique and extraordinary place. As WA’s only recognised provider of homeless residential aged care, it is a privilege to offer a safe and caring home to those who need it most. However, there is a growing need for more facilities that can offer this same level of care and love. Currently, Western Australia lacks a dedicated residential aged care facility for women experiencing homelessness. This is a gap that must be addressed so that everyone—regardless of gender—has the opportunity to live their final years in a supportive and loving environment.
Love, care, and dignity should not be a luxury but a right for everyone in aged care. As we reflect on today, we are reminded of the importance of expanding our efforts and advocating for more resources to support those in need.
As we reflect on the day, we hold onto these words:
“Goodbyes are not forever, goodbyes are not the end, they simply mean, I’ll miss you… till we meet again.”
To the resident we farewelled today: thank you for the joy and memories you brought into our lives. You will always hold a special place in our hearts.
